One of the core aims of Suffolk Probation Area is to protect the public from crime. This is done by managing offenders in order to reduce re-offending.
High risk offenders, including those who have committed sexual or violent offences, are managed by the Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA), which is currently chaired and managed by Suffolk Probation Area. A partnership between probation, Suffolk Constabulary, the prison service and other agencies, MAPPA monitors over 500 offenders living in Suffolk who are assessed as being of high risk of reoffending. The partnership meets regularly in Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds and Lowestoft to discuss cases. Attention is paid to offenders’ behaviour, mental health and housing issues. Offenders deemed to be at critical risk of reoffending or who are not abiding by their licence conditions can be sent back to prison within two hours. Suffolk Probation Area also runs a scheme for monitoring Prolific and other Priority Offenders (PPOs) – the few offenders who commit the largest number of crimes. The scheme is run in partnership with Suffolk Constabulary and other agencies involved in the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships across Suffolk. Once an offender is identified as a PPO, they are given priority on intervention programmes, and probation, police and other partners monitor their case more closely.
